I painted 3 Elvis' last year for the Rockabilly BBQ. "Elvis Pomp" was one of them. Sold to Jem Crossland. He bought it for his wife, Lauren.

Rockabilly Music in Charlotte
Last weekend I was out Friday and Saturday night for ROCKABILLY Music in Charlotte.
Friday (3/13), Jem Crossland played at Puckett's Farm Equipment in Charlotte without the Hypertonics (Chipps Baker & John Marlow). He had a friend Jason from Spindale playing bass for him. No drummer. It was a good show. Jem played to the crowd. Sometimes with the band he seems more...reserved(?) but always gives a good night of singin' and guitarin'. He has an excellent voice and his memory for lyrics makes him seem like a walking JUKEBOX. Jason has improved greatly since I last heard him play. Jason's confidence level has quadrupled. He's been playing with Kitty King.
There wasn't much, if any advertisement about the show because Jem was stepping in to play for a band that canceled at the last minute. I think everyone that showed up got their money's worth times four!
Saturday (3/14) I was at Tremont Music Hall. Kelly and The Cowboys opened the night. She is a a real cutie with a voice that rivals the one she emulates: Patsy Cline.
The Straight 8's followed. Robert is a good singer. He writes excellent songs that capture that rockabilly rawness. Their bassist and drummer do a great job as back up singers. Bernie bangs the drum like a lunatic and is great to watch.
The Tremors finished the night. Jimmy belted out their tunes with his hiccup lilt,... a sound I've grown to like. Slim on bass and Stretch on drums.
Unfortunately the crowd was not much from the start to finish throughout the night. Blame it on the rain, blame it on the St Patricks celebration in uptown Charlotte, blame it on the economy but a lot of good music was missed by far too many people this past weekend.
Jem Crossland will be playing Saturday (3/21) at Puckett's. He and Jason on bass. The Defilers are the HEADLINER that night! Be there or be square!

Honky Tonk Revival 2
Sat. night I went out to Puckett's for the Honky Tonk Revival 2. I got there late and missed The Defilers. The second band, Jem Crossland & the Hypertonics (less their bass player), was already 10 minutes into their set when I came in. Jem has a powerful voice but whatever new material they did - I missed. From there on out it was not Honky Tonk nor Rockabilly but Southern Rock. I endured all I could. There were some good singers/ talented musicians but they were not what I consider honky tonk. There wasn't a good crowd out for the show. Between those watching the Carolina Panther's play and those at ElvisFest I guess there just aren't enough folks to go around.

Ukulebilly??!!!
Saturday night I went out to Puckett's Farm Eqipment to hear Mad Tea Party open for Jem Crossland & the Hypertonics. I've heard Mad Tea Party before and was not unimpressed then,...but Saturday her vocals were up way too loud. That's not a good thing. I had to stand outside for most of their show to keep my ears from bleeding. Loud, High Pitched & Nasally,... not a good combination. Sorry MTP but I think Old dogs, miles away, were probablly howling in pain.
Jem Crossland & the Hypertonics did a couple songs I haven't heard them do before. ABOUT TIME!
A couple swing dancers hit he floor once or twice or thrice.
I left with my clothes wreaking of cigarette smoke. But a drive home at 2am from Puckett's without that lingering stinch just wouldn't be the same!

In the MOVIES
Another Friday is here! The weekend is just minutes away. No plans and that's okay. Sometimes I like to just stay home. Last Friday I took a trip to the Black Cat Burrito in Boone, NC after work. The drummer for Jem Crossland & the Hypertonics wanted me and my ex to ride with him to the show so he could drink and chill on the way home. That's 2 hours up and 2 hours back. That was a LLOOOONNNGG night. Got home @ 4am Saturday. Don't want to repeat that!
Found out this morning that I'm in the background scene of a documentary film,
"Hot Rods, Rat Rods & Kustom Kulture: Back From The Dead: The Complete Build". Wish they could've come up with a longer name for it. Apparently, the scene was shot one year when I was at VIVA LAS VEGAS ROCKABILLY WEEKENDER. I'm wearing Elvis shades and although I haven't seen the film, I was told that I look lost. Go figure! I'll have to see if I can find it at my local Best Buy or Wal-Mart. Autograph seekers and paparazzi please give some time and distance to adjust to my new found fame.
